Personal Injury Cases With Highest Payouts

Personal injury settlements and verdicts come in all sizes. One estimate is that the average personal injury settlement is $52,000, but most are between $3,000 and $75,000.

However, personal injury cases can have multi-million-dollar or more settlements when there is a severe injury or death. Below are the highest recent payouts in various personal injury specialties. Do you have questions about a potential case? The Rockford personal injury attorneys at Fisk & Monteleone can help you.

Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement – $206 Billion

We all know today that smoking tobacco kills people. However, decades ago, the severe effects of smoking on the body still were not well understood. Also, the terrible effects of smoking were concealed by large tobacco companies.

In 1998, 46 states joined to sue the largest tobacco companies in the country to recover billions that it cost to care for lifelong smokers. The lawsuit also went after punitive damages against Big Tobacco for deceptive advertising. The jury decided to punish Big Tobacco and agreed on a final judgment of $206 billion paid over 25 years. The settlement has helped the states and hospitals to care for sick smokers.

$150 Billion For Burn Victim

A young boy in Texas had his life ruined after a teenager sexually assaulted him and set him on fire with gasoline. The boy lived but was left with severe physical and psychological harm. Doctors said 99% of his body was covered in burns.

The boy died later from skin cancer, probably caused by his burn injuries. A personal injury lawsuit was filed in Texas against the defendant. The boy’s family was awarded $150 billion in damages. Unfortunately, the teen would not be able ever to pay this amount, but it was a symbolic victory.

$4.9 Billion For Auto Defect Case

A Los Angeles Jury awarded $4.9 billion to a family who sued General Motors after six people suffered severe, disfiguring injuries when their van exploded in a car accident. The jury demanded that GM pay $107 million in compensatory damages and $4.5 billion in punitive damages.

$4.7 Billion In Talc Cancer Case

A Missouri jury awarded $4.7 billion in damages to 20 women who got ovarian cancer after using talcum powder made by Johnson & Johnson for many years. The jury determined that the company’s talc-based products led to their ovarian cancer. The women received $550 million in compensatory damages and $4 billion in punitive damages.
